Why I’m Starting This Blog

Here I am staring at a blank page, teetering somewhere between euphoria and fear.

Most big decisions in life seem to come with that same mix of feelings: going to a new school, meeting new people, learning something new, starting a job, building a house.

Just a few short years ago, my family and I happened to be doing most of those things at the same time.

Why blogging?

For a long time, I’ve had the quiet feeling that I should start writing things down — not because I have everything figured out, but because life moves quickly and I don’t want to forget the small things.

Life right now is full. Beautifully, sometimes chaotically full.

Sunday morning mid-brunch action: sink full of dishes, pancakes on the griddle, random items on the window sill and who-knows-what on my computer screen.

I’m a mother of eight. I run a household where the days move quickly and there is always something growing, cooking, being built, repaired, learned, or cleaned up. I have muddy boots by the door, half-finished projects on the table, and there is a constant rhythm of meals, and conversations. Some moments pass almost as quickly as they arrive.

When I started talking about some of our recent adventures with family, friends, and acquaintances, some suggested I should start sharing pieces of our family life.

Many people find it strange, amazing, different, or impressive, for example (choose your favourite description!) when I mention that my husband and I have eight children.

And honestly… our life can get a little crazy.

I’d like to think I’ve picked up a few things worth sharing along the way, but he truth is I don’t believe we ever stop learning. And psst… I’ll let you in on a little secret: despite my laid-back demeanour, most of the time I’m simply fumbling my way through trying to make things work — just like everyone else.

This blog isn’t meant to be a polished highlight reel

Instead, I hope it becomes something like a living log of the process.

This is a place where I can document the ordinary things that quietly build a life. I’ll share the rhythms that help our home run a little more smoothly. I’ll talk aout the lessons learned from raising a big family, the small systems that make overwhelming days manageable, and the slow work of cultivating a home that feels steady and nourishing.

Consequently, it may also end up being something of a record — a semi-regular chronicle of our daily life filled with interrupted sleep, muddy boots, growing gardens, moments of glee, and my ongoing attempts at homemaking.

Perhaps one day I’ll look back in awe at all the things I can’t seem to remember now… including how I made that impromptu pasta sauce the kids loved.

More than anything, this space is simply about sharing the journey as it unfolds.

Gardens grow slowly.
Children grow slowly.
Homes are built through thousands of small acts of care.

So here we are, learning things together as I find ways to live life to the fullest with my wild bunch — happy, organized (most days), and well-fed.

Ultimately, if something I share here can make another family’s day a little easier, I’ll be a happy gal.

Let’s begin.

I’m glad you’ve found this little corner of the blogosphere.

Follow me on Instagram, or Pinterest. As with all things, these are a work in progress.
